Hunan University is a key national university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. "Nayu Dalu, Cangzhi Mingshan." Hunan University lies to the front of the rippling Xiangjiang River and is backed by the graceful Yuelu Mountain, which looks as if it were meticulously carved. It enjoys the reputation of being a "millennium-old institution of learning and a century-old prestigious university". The name of the university was inscribed by Chairman Mao Zedong himself. "Only in Chu can talents be found, and here they are most abundant." The university attaches great importance to the introduction and cultivation of high-level talents, with various national talent programs repeatedly reaching new heights.

Hunan University adheres to thoroughly implementing General Secretary Xi Jinping's important expositions on China-Africa relations. It actively serves the national strategy of China-Africa cooperation. It has successively been selected for the "20+20 Cooperation Program between Chinese and African Universities" of the Ministry of Education, the BRICS Universities League, and the "Hundred Cooperation Programs between Chinese and African Universities" (in the field of "trade and investment"). Institutions such as the China-Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation Research Institute (proposed by the Standing Committee of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee), the China-Africa Cultural Exchange Center (jointly awarded by the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Hunan Provincial Party Committee), and the Intelligent Laboratory for China-Africa Economic and Trade Cooperation have been established to promote the high-quality development of China-Africa cooperation.

The Institute of African Studies at Hunan University was officially established in 2024. It is the only second-level entity teaching and research unit focusing on African regional studies among domestic 985 universities. Aimed at aligning with the China-Africa cooperation strategy in the new era, it aspires to become a national team for African studies and create a research highland with international recognition, authority, and influence.

Guided by China-Africa economic and trade cooperation, the institute integrates economics with other advantageous disciplines such as political science, law, computer science and technology, and journalism and communication. It consists of an Economic Research Office, an International Relations Research Office, a Social and Cultural Research Office, and research centers for major African countries.

The institute has long supported the construction of two national-level platforms for China-Africa cooperation, namely the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo and the China-Africa Economic and Trade Deep Cooperation Pilot Zone. It has undertaken numerous major projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, the National Key R&D Program, and the Ministry of Education. It regularly undertakes tasks commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, and the International Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. The institute has established the largest and most comprehensive database for China-Africa economic and trade research in China, covering all 54 African countries and encompassing fields such as politics, economy, society, law, and public opinion. It innovatively conducts "digital-intelligence cross" African studies.

The institute has an extensive international network for cooperation with Africa. It hosted the Seminar on Think Tank Cooperation in China-Africa Economic and Trade at the Third China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo.
